Description

During our Barefoot Opera non-residential summer course running in Telegraph Hill Centre from Monday August 4th to Saturday August 9th we can offer 2 morning sessions for up to 6 singers.

Body Voice Drama

Date – Wednesday August 6th 10:00- 1:30.
Cost – £30

50 minute Barefoot Opera body, voice and movement exercises led by Jenny Miller and Penny Randall Davis, followed by Leo Graham’s introduction to Michael Chekhov acting principles (11-1.30 with break). Chekhov Technique focuses on the actor’s own individuality to understand a character. Chekhov work uses physical movement and the actor’s own imaginative response to understand how to create atmosphere, feelings, and character. It is a Psycho-Physical technique that develops a feedback the relationship between the body and the mind and how they influence each other.

In this session, you will be introduced to two of the architypes of movement and how to use them to colour your performance. We will also work on some imaginative processes and how we can use those to affect our bodies and voices and create character.

Body Voice and Finding Free Movement

Cost – £20

From 10 am Dr. Alexandra (Ali) Baybutt, Laban/ Bartenieff movement system specialist leads, with support from Barefoot Opera’s Jenny Miller with whom she has collaborated for many years. We will focus on the nuances of human movement experienced individually and as a group. Relevant for performance training and practice, Irmgard Bartenieff argued that “body movement is not a symbol for expression, it is the expression”. This is approached through sensing anatomical and spatial relationships for qualitative and functional range.

Please wear clothes you can move and roll in and ideally bare feet or socks.

Barefoot Opera’s tutors positively enable and support the work that singers are already engaged in, whilst offering fresh insights into the skills of classical singing and integrated movement.

Since we believe that real artistry and satisfaction in our art form is only found by engaging our whole self in the process, we work with the whole body /person in every sense.  We firmly believe that a deeper understanding of how your body and breath work in movement will significantly develop your understanding of your voice, and to this end we have been creating a unique body of work for over fifteen years with our movement specialists.

What is special about Barefoot Opera’s integrated training?

Barefoot Opera invites you to rethink and deconstruct: to strip opera down to the basics of body, breath, movement, sound. We help you to access what you already have: the tools and resources to improve your whole experience of singing and performing.

Our training exercises enable you to develop an energised, physical, ensemble approach – key to facilitating the demands of contemporary directors.
